“Thriller” by Michael Jackson-Throwback Thursday

Michael Jackson dancing with the living dead.

Before anyone says anything…. YES,  I know it’s not Thursday; it’s Wednesday.  I may be scatter brained sometimes and get my days mixed up, BUT today isn’t one of those days.

Today is my THURSDAY!  Which means tomorrow is my FRIDAY! And we all know how much I LoVe FrIdAyS, right?  Hooray for Friday!!!!!!!

Ok, now I’m getting ahead of myself…

Since tomorrow is my Friday, I decided to mix things up a little bit and do my Throwback Thursday today…

Song: Thriller

Artist: Michael Jackson

Album: Thriller

Memory:

Who doesn’t have memories of this song????   First thing I remember is the poster I got for Christmas one year along with a t-shirt and pencils/notepad… All with the picture from the album cover.

Michael Jackson was AMAZING to me back then… he was such an amazing artist and seemed to completely have his wits about himself at that stage in his life.  He looked human back then…  It saddens me to think of how much he changed over the years and had such a struggle.  Who wouldn’t crack under constant speculation and criticism?  Not defending or accusing….  Not my place to do so… Back to the music I go!

This video scared the living daylights outta me!  The LAUGH in the song scared me even more…. I don’t think I listened to that song on my tape for a long while after I got it because I was a CHICKEN!  I remember being at my grandma’s house to sleepover with my cousin (Yes, Jess if you’re reading this, it was you!). * For the record… I was a cry baby…   a little cry baby 😉

I don’t remember ALL the specifics, but I do have some recollection of Thriller playing, me not wanting it too, probably some crying on my part, wanting grandma to call my mom and dad to come get me and gram saying no.  LOL.  Yup, I could be a cry baby.  BUT I did stay the night at Grams.  🙂

Ok, so in my opinion, the coolest part of this video is the choreography…  Hello?!?!?  I sooooo wanted to know all the dance moves… heck, I still do!  Probably look like a complete idiot doing them, but who cares!  Pretty sure my older sis would know the moves if I asked her … and if she doesn’t I’m sure she’d be up for learning them!  What do ya say, sis???? 😉

So who’s up for it?  What are your thoughts on Thriller?  What’s your favorite MJ song?

Totally 80’s

Ok… I must admit that last night’s Thursday Throwback about the movie, “Say Anything” and the song, “In Your Eyes” got me in the mood to listen to some good old 80’s music while reminiscing on all that made the 80’s so wonderfully cheesy!

I am a product of the 80’s even though I was born in ’78. I mean, come on…. how much does one remember from the first 2 years of their lives??? Not too much.

BUT… I do remember watching Punky Brewster and thinking that her shoes were so cool! I remember wearing flourescent spandex shorts and now wishing that I didn’t. I loved wearing jelly shoes even if they hurt to high heavens and gave me blisters. I remember being beyond excited when I got my first Cabbage Patch doll, whose name was Gwendolyn Merlina, after my mom and aunt waited in a mob of people fighting to get one. I remember going to the movie theatre to see Rainbow Brite and The Care Bears and taking homemade popcorn into the theater. I do remember listening to my favorite 80’s songs well past the 80’s… some of these songs still remain my favorites today…. Come On Eileen, Beat It and Take On Me just to name a few!

I remember the awful outfits and horrible hair. Wearing banana clips and slap bracelets… I remember the pegged jeans, slouch socks and blue eye liner. The only saving grace was, we all looked just as ridiculous! This had got me thinking that I should dig out some pictures one of these days… I’m all for subjecting myself to a little embarrassment! Those will come in a later post! 🙂

Playing with Barbie Fashion Plates, Care Bears, Pound Puppies, My Little Ponies, Strawberry Shortcake….

My favorite "toy" of the 80s

Watching Family Ties, Growing Pains, Facts of Life, Who’s the Boss?, Silver Spoons My Two Dads, The Cosby Show, Mr. Belvedere, Different Strokes, Mork & Mindy and Perfect Strangers every week…

Mooning over my favorite star crushes Kirk Cameron and Ricky Schroder.

How could I resist these adorable faces????  I’m pretty sure I wasn’t alone in this!

I really did LOVE the 80’s!

A little ways back I got an email titled Child of the 80’s….  Take a stroll down memory lane with me… I got a good chuckle to say the least 🙂

By the way….. I’m VERY happy to say that the New Kids on the Block ARE having a reunion tour… I will be attending in a few short months…. May even have to bust out my over sized pins. 😉

Yup…. I love 80’s cheesiness!  How about you???

What were some of your best/worst memories from the 80’s?  Anything I forgot???

If the 80’s were before your time what do you find puzzling about the decade?

“Say Anything” – Movie Style, Thursday Throwback

Movie: Say Anything

Song: In Your Eyes

Artist: Peter Gabriel

Album: So

Changed it up a tiny bit in choosing a movie for the Thursday Throwback this week….mainly because of a SONG in the movie!

Just upon my saying the name of the movie, you can envision the scene.  The scene that makes the movie…   John Cusack’s character, Lloyd Dobler holding a boombox overhead, blaring “In Your Eyes” outside of Diane Court’s house.

guy after a gal's heart....

Admit it ladies….

How many of you thought that was the sweetest thing ever?  I know I sure did!  I’d probably fall over flat on my face if my mister ever did that for me… cheesy or not, I’d take it in a heart beat!  I’m a cheesy romantic at heart… what can I say???

The overall premise of the movie is just sweet too… average boy chasing after an intelligent daddy’s girl.  Him seeking advice from his sister and girl friends.  Both trying to decide what they’re doing and where they’re going after graduation.  I just find the whole thing endearing.

Some of my favorite quotes from the movie… and what I took from them…

“One question: do you need… someone, or do you need me?… Forget it, I don’t really care.” – Lloyd

Have you ever REALLY asked yourself that when in a relationship??? I have… If you answer that you need “someone” you’re not in the relationship with the right person.   I want to need that special person, not just anybody to fill a void.  When it’s right it will be right.

“Why can’t you be in a good mood? How hard is it to decide to be in a good mood and be in a good mood once in a while?” – Lloyd

Sometimes being in a good mood, can be tricky!  It takes effort to pull yourself up and outta the dumps sometimes… Looking on the sunny side when things seem dreary is a CHOICE; one that we all have the ability to make, if we are willing to step up to the challenge.

“I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.”

This sooooooo reminds me of where I was at upon entering my undergraduate work at Edinboro.  One minute I thought I wanted to be an accountant after having always thought I’d go in to education.  Then I toyed with the idea of social work, followed quickly by psychology…only to end up in none other than EDUCATION.  Go figure.  It’s so hard to know what you want to do with your life when you’ve just become an “adult.”  Here I am at age 32 and still don’t know EXACTLY what I want to do with my life… I mean I have ideas and goals, but I’m not COMPLETELY in charge of what goes on here.  I’ve got a little help from Someone else.  Just sayin’.

In all of the glorious cheesiness that is 80’s pop culture, from the names of the characters to the songs and even the plot, Say Anything is an absolute winner in my book.

BUT THE SONG…. In Your Eyes is just completely beautiful… I WANT to feel this way about the man I marry… I want him to feel the same about me.

“in your eyes
the light the heat
in your eyes
I am complete
in your eyes
I see the doorway to a thousand churches
in your eyes
the resolution of all the fruitless searches
in your eyes
I see the light and the heat
in your eyes
oh, I want to be that complete
I want to touch the light
the heat I see in your eyes”

That may make me a dreamer… that may make me naive…

I will say that it makes me hopeful.  Hopeful that two people can find each other… love each other and fight for each other.

There… that’s it; you’ve suffered through enough of my cheesy smorgasbord!

I don’t blame ya if you never came back after suffering through such a huge heap of romantic blubbering!  I just can’t help it!

I’m a romantic at heart…. All was have been.  Always will be.

“Scarlet Begonias” by The Grateful Dead-Thursday Throwback

Grateful Dead from the Mars Hotel

Image via Wikipedia

Artist: The Grateful Dead

Album: Mars Hotel

Song: Scarlet Begonias

Memory:

At times I seriously think I was born in the wrong decade….

Many of my favorite artists were in their heydays well before I was born or when I was a bit too young to partake in catching them in a live performance.  Even still, music has the ability to transcend generations and decades still proving to be relevant to listeners of today and still more to come years down the road.

While I didn’t grow up listening to The Dead as I did the Beatles, Journey, and the like; one of my best friends in elementary school got me to listening at a pretty young age…12 or 13 years old, maybe.  I pretty much immediately fell in love with their eclectic and unique stylings and arrangements; becoming enthralled by the drawn out jams held on various bootleg recordings.

I had one missed opportunity to see the band perform before Jerry Garcia passed away, when I was about 14 or so.  Probably thinking it was a very WISE decision on my mother’s part for saying “no” to me going to that concert; not necessarily the best surroundings for the naive 14-year-old I was if you know what I mean.  Up until that point the only other concert I had attended (and twice I might add) was the New Kids on the Block…  Quite a bit different from the Dead, wouldn’t you say?  But you see, even in my younger days, I had a wide range in musical tastes.

My Grateful Dead musical library slow grew over the years from more popular tunes such as Casey Jones, Truckin’  and Touch of Grey to songs like Sugar Magnolias and Fire on the Mountain and further still to my most favorite Grateful Dead songs of all time which include but are not limited to……

  1. Ripple– Reminds me of driving down the mountain from my aunt’s house to campus during the summer of 1999
  2. Box of Rain– Just an awesome up beat song; not to mention an awesome smelling incense and body oil sold at Earthshine in Edinboro, PA
  3. Althea– The intro to this awesome…. Just a kick back, chill, dig that I simply never tire of.
  4. Attics of My Life– the harmonies in this song are BeAuTiFuL!!!
  5. Ramble on Rose – Classic Dead
  6. Unbroken Chain-Absolutely stunningly, awesome song… Catchy as can be, and sticks in my head for days after listening
  7. Built to Last– GREAT lyrics; really hits home with me… Chorus, is the best
  8. Estimated Prophet– HAPPY song ( for me at least) it’s got a sweet vibe
  9. Dark Star– beautifully arranged jam

And my all time favorite….

10.) Scarlet Begonias-  I’ve got lots of memories of this song; from blasting it in my car and in my dorm room to chilling with friends.  Lots of people have done covers of this song too…

From to Taylor Hicks….

to Jimmy Buffet….

to Sublime….

some were pretty good, but for me none is better than the Dead’s version…

I definitely wouldn’t classify myself as a Deadhead persay;   as I was a good little girl, it didn’t stop me from enjoying their music every second I get… many have a negatively perceived imaged attached as to what one is, but me….  I simply enjoy the music; I love the chill vibe I get from it; I love the arrangements… Quite simply I just LOVE the Grateful Dead, end of story!

What are your thoughts?  …

Seriously, I was born a decade or two late… Just sayin’!

“Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice – Thursday Throwback

To the Extreme

Image via Wikipedia

Artist: Vanilla Ice, AKA Rob Van Winkle

Album: To the Extreme

Song: Ice Ice Baby

Memory:

Who doesn’t know this song?  I’m pretty sure I am not alone in “bragging” that I still know all the lyrics for this song…  I hear those first few notes of the opening rift and I am bobbing my head like the day I was in 1990 when this song first came out.  I guess besides the fact that anyone and everyone knew ALL the lyrics for this song and the catchy beats , what I remember most about this song and Vanilla Ice all revolve around appearance.

Those pants…  What the heck were those pants???  All that extra fabric; the gaudy metallic colors; yet people started trying to pull off that look.  I was certainly digging the way Ice was wearing ’em back in the day, but no one else was able to pull it off.  Looking back, what was I thinking?  What was he thinking?  Doesn’t much matter cause he made $ off of us suckers way back when.

His hair… talk about starting a fad with the fellas.  The high top hair style was quite mystifying to me back then.  How”d he get it to stay with all that flitting around the stage?  Guessing he’s partly responsible for depleting a portion of the ozone layer with excessive use of aqua net or some other large quantity of aerosol hairspray.  Maybe it was a form of lacquer or glue, I just don’t know.  And you can’t forget the “steps” he had cut into the sides.  All the boys were getting steps cut into the sides of their hair, the number of steps equating to just how cool they were.  The more steps, the “cooler.”  Or at least we thought so.

I found this Jim Carrey parody and just had to share it with you….

The moves… Come on now… You know you’ve tried pulling ’em off one time or another.  You can’t deny it.  I remember watching a video of one of his concerts at my Aunt Anna’s house.  There were at least 6 of us trying to dance and sing along, acting a crazy fools. Oh what clowns we must’ve looked like?  Thankfully no videos were taken of the embarrassing debacle that we were.

The movie:  Cool as Ice… I can’t even bring myself to writing anything about it.  Barely thought the movie was cool back then… Now I am embarrassed by the lameness that I so freely enjoyed back then.  Eh, what are ya going to do?  Too young and stupid to know any better.

So here it is…

Yo! VIP, let’s kick it.

Ice, ice baby.

Ice, ice baby.

All right stop,  collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new invention
Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Flow like a harpoon daily and nightly
Will it ever stop, yo I don’t know
Turn off the lights and I’ll glow
To the extreme I rock a mic like a vandal
Light up a stage and wax a chump like a candle
Dance…..

Well, you know the rest.

What fashion fad did you partake in when you were younger?  Ever try to imitate the image of a celebrity?

I will admit, I did have a pair or two of parachute pants back then.  Pretty sure one pair was purple and the other was black.  Haven’t found any pictures as proof though, so we’ll just leave it at that!!!

“More Than Words” by Extreme – Thursday Throwback

Band: Extreme

Song: More Than Words

The Memory:

Several memories come to mind when I hear this song.

1.) 1992, in 8th grade this song was huge! Everyone knew it & loved it. Had never heard of the band Extreme before… can’t say I listened to any other songs by them back then either. Most distinct recollection of that song was all of my classmates & myself hanging out on the porch at someone’s house for their birthday. That song came on and EVERYONE started singing it.  I mean EVERYONE.  It was corny… it was cheesy… it is a memory.

2.) My younger sister & I went to visit our Aunt & Uncle in Northern Pennsylvania for a week during the summer of that same year. They live in the cut… to them everything was “just down the road” even if it was 25-45 minutes down the mountain.  We LOVED spending time out there. Lil sis & I took a ride with uncle just down the road to get ice cream, when what song should start playing on the radio but More Than Words. I of course said how much I liked the song; my uncle was in total agreement which we both found really cool since decades separated us in age; lil sis says, “What is this hippie music?” Uncle & I just laughed.

***side note*** lil sis & I are 3 years apart. We are sooo different in every way imaginable.   Different taste in music ( she thinks a lot of mine is hippie music still to this day while I listen to a lot of the same stuff she does too!) , clothing, attitudes,  appearance,  etc. Wouldn’t have it any other way!  She’s her own person as am I… I wish I had  a little more of her in me though!

More Than Words remains one of my favorite songs till the day… holding a top spot in my playlists.

What song do you love that others may not?

Thursday Throwback- “1979” by The Smashing Pumpkins

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Image via Wikipedia

You all know I LoVe music…

From all decades, genres, artists and mediums…

Really there is no single style of music that is off-limits for me…

Always looking for something new… (Not necessarily brand new, but at least new to me)

I’ve gone on in several posts about the importance of music in my life so I won’t go in to great detail again, because I don’t wanna beat a dead horse.

BUT…

I love the POWER music has… it can cheer you or calm you or transport you to another place and time.

I have SOOOOOOOOOOO many memories associated with music, that I decided I’d like to share some with you!  Exciting, huh?

Here’s the first one!

The Band:  Smashing Pumpkins

The Album: Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness

The Song: 1979

The Memory:

Freshman year of college… Lobby rats, the self-proclaimed title of my group of hippie-esk, artsy-fartsy, free-spirited friends who hung out in the lobby of our icky dorm CONSTANTLY!  Always staying up late playing cards, being stupid, eating or cramming for tests/projects at the last minute…Acting a fool at any given moment.

Quite the eclectic mix of individuals, each bringing something unique to the table.

One particularly unusual sunny day we decided to take our “hangout” outside. (I went to school in the snow belt of PA so there was snow more often than not!) One of us lived on the first floor and decided to turn our stereo speakers out towards the lawn and began blasting tunes.  Happy tunes; Most specifically 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins.  We’re out on the lawn sprawled out on blankets eating God only knows what we scrounged up for our impromptu picnic/party. Some are playing frisbee, others are dancing, some of us are talking, others still are making flower headbands… Seriously, they did and it wasn’t the year 1979.  It was 1996 or 1997 ( I can’t quite seem to remember if it was in the fall or spring).

A very brilliant, bright and happy moment that I remember from a significant time in my life.  My first time away from home was filled with lots of ups and downs… Meeting TONS of new people from all different walks of life.

I was in the process of finding myself.  Heck, I still am today!

I know for sure though I’m not a “hippie;” nor was I ever…but I did meet some pretty amazing people.  Some that helped me to come out of my shell…others that made me wanna crawl back in…Only one that I have remained close with through all these years…some that I haven’t seen or heard from since shortly after freshman year, let alone even think of in my day-to-day.

That is with the exception of when I hear this song… instantaneously I am back on the lawn in front of Towers Hall… Not a care in the world …

For those of you that may have missed any of my previous posts about music be sure to check ’em out!  You never know, you may discover a new dig! Here’s a few listed below…
